The construction of Organic Fuel Technology’s first full-scale microwave plant has begun at GreenLab Skive. This milestone marks the culmination of years of research, testing, and development, which will now be realized in a full-scale facility as part of the EUDP-funded WaveFuels project.
The plant is expected to be completed in 2027 and will enable the conversion of sludge and other waste streams into valuable biochar and bio-oil.
“It is with great delight that the strong idea and scientific foundation behind OFT’s microwave technology is now on the path to be demonstrated and utilized on a full scale. Our mission has always been to make waste valuable, and we now look forward to delivering on that promise,” says Jens Henrik Haahr, CEO of Organic Fuel Technology A/S.
Microwave Technology Turns Waste into Fuel and CO₂ Storage
The full-scale plant will be the largest microwave unit of its kind in the world, harnessing microwave energy equivalent to the energy of 120 household microwaves working in unison, using single-mode waves to transform sludge into high-value end products.
“The technology is essentially ‘pyrolysis on speed,’ creating highly efficient and controlled cracking of biomass with microwave energy. This enables us to produce high-quality biochar and bio-oil from sewage sludge at lower temperatures than traditional pyrolysis,” explains Jens Henrik Haahr.
When in full operation, the plant is expected to process up to 11,000 tons of dewatered sewage sludge annually, generating 1,200 tons of biochar and 1,200 tons of bio-oil each year.
OFT’s patented microwave technology processes biomass to produce bio-oil and biochar. After post-processing, the bio-oil can be used as fuel in heavy transport, while the biochar can be used for carbon storage with additional benefits in soil improvement when applied on agricultural land.
